Bill, you will want to consult a tax advisor to find out if you qualify in your particular situation. You may find that you do not qualify since the current home is in your name, but there may be additional factors to consider that make you eligible.

My name was added to a mortgage when it was refinanced by a nonrelative a few years ago. I was not the original buyer. The house been paid off and my name is still on the home. I purchased a home (being a first time buyer) in 2009. Do I qualify for the tax credit?

Monica, I'm going to suggest that you do a few things. First, get a copy of your credit report to find out exactly how bad your credit is, and then figure out what you can do to bring your score up a little. Raising your score will give you a better chance at getting a mortgage loan, and so will building up a significant down payment. Also be sure to check out the FHA website (www.fha.gov) for information on first time homebuyer loans.

If your credit is bad because you have a difficult time paying bills in a timely manner then you will want to figure out a way to get that situation under control before you jump into homeownership, otherwise you're setting yourself up for a bad situation.
